Well I did it......and it sucks :0(
I have been a member of Pierce County Bee Keepers Association for a few years now and about a year ago was offerred a chair on the Board of Director as Editor of the Newsletter. I jumped on it! I was so excited to be apart of an organization that actually had a voice with the public...an organization that would work toward educating people on sustainable beekeeping!
My first meeting consisted of yummy baked goods, honey candies, and a whole lot of arguing! Each meeting thereater was much of the same. They argued about nomenating honorary members, the terminology of the bylaws, wether to send documents by snail mail or just sick with email, who's right and who's wrong. Never did the subject of bees come up other than to get updates on the club hives, which are medicated wether they need it or not.
Most of the board members have held seats on the board for decades. And a lot of their ideas fall under the beekeeping mindset of 20-30 years ago. The world is changing. The way people keep bees is changing, as it should. Now don't get me wrong, I have learned so so so much about honey bee behavior and beekeeping from these same people and value and respect their experiences and ideas...but at the same time, I wish they were more open to NEW ideas and research!
